It's certainly attracting a lot of attention and a lot of users, myself included.<br /><br />But as a developer and former CTO myself, I think seesmic could become even more successful if its implementation was simplified and its basic utility filled out a little better. Here are two suggestions I think might make a big difference.<h3>Ditch all the Flash except for video rendering</h3>Yeah, the rotating lists and animation are fancy, but all that "flashturbation" devours processor cycles and memory. While on seesmic, my browser will frequently pin the processor at 100% for minutes at a time, and gobble up nearly 120 megabytes of page-file usage.<br /><br />Except for the video rendering and its play/pause controls, you would make a LOT of friends by going to an XHTML/CSS/javascript implementation. Memory usage would be reduced and performance would certainly improve, perhaps dramatically. Forget all the cute list animation. Those lists frequently screw up and overwrite, or stall and lock up the browser. <br /><h3>Include some way to find users so I can follow them</h3>It's nearly impossible to locate a user's account page unless you can find a post they've made in the public timeline. <br /><br />Finding a user could be done several ways. Here are two:<ul><li>A search window.</li><li>Something like Twitter's convention of recognizing a simple URL that contains the users handle. I am a veteran software engineer, project leader and former CTO of a successful medical imaging company. I can design and code circles around most anyone, and have been doing object-oriented design and architecture since the term was invented in the 80s. I have taken multiple product ideas from initial prototype to product. But... in all my years of work, I never really had a talent for web page design or learned the ins and outs of CSS, client-side scripting, etc. That always seemed to be someone else's job.<br /><br />If you know Rails, you know that building the "view" pages requires graphic design talent, a good knowledge of HTML/CSS and just a smidgen of Ruby/Rails to call the controller functions to fill out the content. The controller and model code is something I am very comfortable with, although I'm still learning Ruby. But creating a decent looking, easy-to-use web page that works for all browsers is something I have neither the artistic talent nor the time to pick up from scratch on my own, although I would love, love to learn about it.<br /><br />I am looking for someone who does have those design and HTML skills to work with me on this project. In a sense, I'll trade my programming knowledge, if you care to pick it up, for your page and site building knowledge. <br /><br />Make no mistake, this is a no-pay, sweat equity, bootstrap proposition. In return for a reasonable share in whatever may come of this idea, I need really no more than a few hours a week of your time to carry the ball on the design and HTML end. I have no VC nor angel funding, nor do I want any at this time. There are also features to hide what you say from anyone you don't specifically befriend and to completely prevent someone from sending you anything, even a form request to befriend you. These features give users complete control over who they listen to, and who can listen to, or even contact them. It's completely opt-in. No one has any "right" to throw anything at you that you don't want. <br /><br />This has led to a quite enjoyable environment, and an evolution of groups of people who mutually befriend each other, and share the same sense of proper behavior. There aren't any "haters" on Twitter that last longer than a couple of days because everyone else simply stops following them. <br /><br />Now, you might argue that this leads to groups who only agree with each other and shut out what they don't want to hear. To an extent this is true. Most of the people in my group of roughly 220 followers/followees I think tend to be politically liberal and tend not to discuss religion or politics. But it is not so much what you say on Twitter as how you say it. We were just commenting last night that we do have a mix of political and religious sentiment across the group, but people tend to not rant, accuse or polarize discussions. That isn't to say it doesn't happen from time to time. I'm probably one of the worst offenders, to tell the truth, but we all endeavor to keep our emotions in check and cut each other considerable slack, realizing that every once in a while something will touch a nerve and we just have to blow off a little steam. I can tell I've done that when almost no one replies to what I've said. The silence is a pretty good indication that you've gone a bit overboard and need to watch what you're saying.<br /><br />The worst fate on Twitter is to not be followed. It's the online equivalent of the Old World practice of shunning. I've lost a follower or two in my time and it's not a pleasant experience.<br /><br />And companies that try to join Twitter, befriend a zillion people and then spam them with output-only announcements never make it out of the batter's box. Almost nobody follows them. So, this has the effect of companies not even trying to spam, because it's just not worth the effort.<br /><br />So what I've discovered from Twitter's "rules of engagement" is that giving people absolute control of what they hear and see is good thing. It's not a sin to be able to shut out people who act badly. It makes people a little more considerate and well-behaved. I'm thinking if we get enough inspired commentary we might actually get some answers out of Twitter about why they have such a hard time just keeping the service running.<br /><br />1. I find the current lag in postings to be very detrimental to the whole concept and usefulness of Twitter. If there is a 20 minute delay between the time I post something and everyone else seeing it, then it's at least 40 minutes before I can see anyone's response to what I say. This can be particularly debilitating when we are relying on Twitter at conferences or to stay in touch when meeting up.<br /><br />2. There are parts of Twitter that eat performance but in my mind, serve no useful purpose. The matrix of tiny avatars to the right of the Tweet listing is of no use to me because they are not arranged in any useful or understandable order and it doesn't show them all anyway. I'd say get rid of it if it would help performance.<br /><br />3. Do you have any information about why Twitter just can't seem to make their site work properly and with good performance? This is not exactly untrodden ground. There are lots of very smart people who know how to performance engineer a site so it runs fast. Is it the SMS gateways that are the problem? WHAT IS IT? I so wish they would just level with us.<br /><br />Please comment on these questions or add your own thoughts. When everyone is most concerned and personally committed to getting things done rather than polishing their own apple, things happen quickly.</p><p>The first job was to come up with the product idea and give it name. I love Twitter for the spontaneity, the friendships, the fun, and the coerced brevity. But honestly, why can't they make it work better? I've been on Twitter since early this year. I think I signed up during SXSW, when a lot of others did. So that's about 7 months. And in that time there have been almost no improvements in performance or reliability. I still get the "bluebird" page many times a day, indicating their servers couldn't respond. <br /><br />There are still stupid little bugs that would take almost no time to fix; for instance, the long-tweet-with-no-spaces-bug. That happens when you follow someone, but the page never updates. You get the perpetual busy-cycling icon on the top right of the page. Refreshing the page fixes it. That seems to me to be a simple Ajax bug.<br /><br />C'mon guys, that's like a couple lines of code to fix. Why are you monkeying around with format, font and style sheet changes when there are <span style="font-weight:bold;">real</span> problems to fix? <br /><br />Why can't you get the performance and reliability stabilized? This is not rocket science, guys. Sites like google mail, amazon, and facebook are much more complex in data structure and demanding in functionality, yet they perform with virtually no downtime or lost inputs. <br /><br />I've analyzed and modeled your information structure. It's not that complicated. You seem to have engineering cycles to redesign your UI and add new functionality. I doubt it. That takes concentration.<br />How did anyone work before telephones? What about the answering machine? <br />In addtion to asynchronous telephone communication, it also provided spam (ie, telemarketer) screening.<br />should all telephone service be billed like cell service so telemarketers can be blocked?<br />At bottom, is there any value to unsolicited communication?<br />Can you live and thrive with only info you actively seek?<br />Is advertising or unsolicited communication worth anything?<br />would newspaper ads or TV commercials be sufficient?<br />new soc-net messaging is white-list only. Tonight I was engaged in this exercise reading an article called <a href="http://www.cio.com/article/125851/Why_Ruby_on_Rails_Succeeded">Why Ruby on Rails Succeeded.</a> If you don't know, Ruby on Rails is a web application framework written in the programming language Ruby. Both Ruby and Rails are open-source projects, meaning they're free to use and the source is openly distributed under a license that requires (not just encourages) that modifications be similarly distributed and never charged for.<br /><br />So you might ask yourself why anyone would ever pour massive amounts of effort into something without getting paid to do it. The answer is simple, because they can do what <span style="font-weight:bold;">they </span>want to do, not what some manager, bug review board or marketing suit told them to. They can do what they think will be good for users (which they frequently are) or will make the code simpler, faster or easier to maintain. If what they do really is better, as proved by it being widely adopted and actually used, then their personal stock rises in the community and their worth as a for-pay programmer rises as well. But more importantly, their own self-respect rises. <br /><br />This is one thing that open source programming shares with on-line video, podcasts and blogs. People do it because they enjoy it and because it makes them feel good about themselves. <br /><br />And I think this unpaid, create-for-free open market of ideas, software and entertainment is a purer form of meritocracy than the for-profit, rapaciously competitive corporate world. Why? Because it's not controlled by money, it's controlled by quality. Thanks also to CC for the clue-in to the movie screening.</p><p>It was a really fun crowd and I got to meet some great people for the first time. Doug Haslam, Clarence Smith, Laura Fitton, nice to meet you all. Got to know CC Chapman and Kroosh a lot better, had a nice chat with Steve Garfield at the movie theater, and got to meet Amy Carpenter, whom Steve invited. I&#39;ll admit to being a bit star-struck with Amy. I was too shy to engage her in conversation. I&#39;ve admired her art and video for a long time and always wanted to meet her. I did catch the last half of her wild quitting-her-job fantasy on this clip. </p><p>Dave LaMorte also showed up toward the end and some others, too. Was a really fun time. After the food and drink we went to the movie and then five of us who were really thirsty decided to go for a little after-meet meet at Boston Billiards. Some great conversation ensued there. I think they imagine I got it from a jealous lover. I should be so lucky. In fact, I just picked at a scab from some kind of cut I got playing in the yard as a kid.<br /><br />3. I love cranberry juice. In fact, I'm going to get another glass now...with ice.<br /><br />4. I saw Jimi Hendrix live, went to college with Jay Giles, but didn't make it to Woodstock.<br /><br />5. The Bush Administration's minions in the FTC are ready to abandon net neutrality and hand the Internet over to the likes of Comcast and Cox Communication. <br /><br />What does this mean? It means that if you like the way you have to take 20 home-shopping channels to get The Travel Channel or The Science Channel or you can't get a channel you want because that channel won't pay enough to the cable provider, you'll love a world without Net Neutrality.<br /><br />I went to SaveTheInternet.com and wrote my own little letter to the FCC to support the preservation of Net Neutrality. Here's what I wrote:<br /><br /><blockquote>I am a career software developer with over 35 years in the software development business. I have see the Internet grow from a fledging technical curiosity to the most potent force for political, economic and social change and innovation the world has seen since the invention of the printing press.<br /><br />At this time, large and powerful corporations with a completely self-serving agenda are attempting to control the content and flow of information on the Internet the same way they do on cable television. The FCC should not and must not allow this to happen. Please preserve the open, free and untrammeled access to the Internet we all now enjoy by preserving Net Neutrality.<br /></blockquote><br /><br />You should do the same. After several pitchers of beer with wurst, cabbage, potatoes and other such German fare, we decided to head down to Fanueill Hall and get something different to eat and drink. A good time was had by all and we resolved to have these on a regular basis. There, I admit it. As any of my TwitterPeeps will attest, Twitter can be very addictive. But why? What is it about this service that has made it so successful?<br /><br /><span style="font-weight:bold;">You're in Control</span> - I think this is the most important reason Twitter works. Each user is completely in control of whose Tweets they see. If someone acts abusively, or you don't feel comfortable with them for any reason, you can drop them instantly, never to be seen again. Draconian? Maybe, but people really love it. At first, it was frustrating that I couldn't just reach out and start talking to someone. It almost felt like a bit of the old high school lunch table cliquishness. You know, where the "popular" kids sat together and the unpopular dared not approach? But I soon realized that you have to have something good to say before people will follow you. Which brings me to the next point about reputation.<br /><br /><span style="font-weight:bold;">Reputation is Everything</span>. Twitter is very Web 2.0. Probably the most notable thing about Web 2.0 activity is that people really can't "push" their message or ideas to you. RSS really encapsulates it. Unless someone subscribes, you go unheard. The way you succeed is by doing good things, putting them out there and letting word of mouth propagate your works. Yes, it takes time, but the rewards are greater and more solid, because you get respect, loyalty and friendship the old-fashioned way: you earn them!<br /><br /><span style="font-weight:bold;">Simplicity</span> - There isn't a ton of gratuitous (at least to most people) functionality. You see how it works immediately, and if you know someone who's on it already, you start with their friends, and get others by reference.<br /><br /><span style="font-weight:bold;">Informal, conversational </span>- Twitter is not for writing deathless prose. It's a way to make and expand a circle of friends and feel close to them. Critics attack it as narcissistic, but they miss the point completely. It's not about telling no one in particular about what you're doing, it's telling your friends what you're doing. Perhaps these critics just watch the public timeline. I could see how you'd get that idea from that experience. But I think almost all Twitter users just follow their own group, just like we keep in touch with other friends.<br /><br /><span style="font-weight:bold;">Not anonymous, not real-time </span>- I gave up on chat rooms a long time back because it's all just inane blather. Anyone can get on them, and just spew rapid-fire to their heart's content. Twitter updates every few minutes, so you don't get that shoot from the hip, stream-of-consciousness drivel. For sure, Twitter's not great prose, but it's a step above chat.<br /><br /><span style="font-weight:bold;">Pictures </span>- Although there's no requirement to be accurate, the avatar pics attached to each Tweet really do reinforce a feeling of closeness. And people have fun with them, too, like on Stripper Fridays.<br /><br /><span style="font-weight:bold;">Honesty, Good Manners </span>- Because of the control aspect (see below) people are a lot more honest about who they are they and behave well. It's immediately obvious that Twitter is all about having friends and followers. If no one follows you, there's really not much point to being on Twitter because you'll never have anyone respond to you. I've rarely seen or heard of any abusive activity because word gets around fast, and bad actors get dropped instantly. So, it really rewards nice, friendly, funny people and weeds out weirdos. So groups of co-respondents tend to get better and better.<br /><br /><span style="font-weight:bold;">It can be very useful.</span> I've seen many people ask for help or advice or ideas on Twitter and get nearly instant feedback. It's that small support group of friends and acquaintances that get you through your day.<br /><br /><span style="font-weight:bold;">Twitter is also just plain fun.</span> It's like having that group of friends at work or school that you hang out and joke around with. Griping, teasing, flirting and other such social interactions are what make Twitter fun.<br /><br />So, there are my reasons for why Twitter is such a hit. But computers are computers and sometimes they don't get it right, in spite of the geniuses that program them. Witness this screenshot of my gmail. Google generates ad revenue by scanning your email content (yeah, a little creepy, but whatevers) and matching up advertisers to what it perceives the content of the email to be. For instance, everytime I get email from my golf club, Google will match up golf-related advertising. <br /><br />This email is no exception, but click on the pic to get the full-size version at Flickr and check out the other ads that made it to the top of the sidebar. Consequently, they or their progeny have been returning every year to try to nest. This week, I had to evict them from a nest they'd started on our front porch. They moved to the back porch, at which point I bought some plastic webbing and have tried to prevent them from making nests there. The problem is that once they have eggs or hatchlings in the nest, they become very aggressive and will attack at high speed anyone who ventures onto the porch near the nest. I appreciate the concerns you raised about this decision. You may be interested to know that in the U.S. House of Representatives, Congressman Jay Inslee (D-WA) introduced the Internet Radio Equality Act (H.R. 2060). H.R. 2060 effectively voids the Copyright Royalty Board's decision and sets new rates for the royalties to be paid by Internet radio stations. Specifically, H.R. 2060 states that commercial Internet radio stations instead pay one of two royalty rates for the next five years, to be determined by the station itself, as follows: 1. 0.33 cents per hour of sound recordings transmitted to a single listener; or 2. 7.5 percent of the revenues received by the provider during that year that are directly related to the provider's digital transmissions of sound recordings. I was one of the early callers. I was very impressed with the quality of the video, and the fact that the video and audio stayed in synch for the whole broadcast, and never dropped out. That may sound more like "It didn't suck that bad", but seriously, if you've watched any live video on the internet, you'll agree that that's a significant accomplishment. Good on ustream!!<br /><br />The chat stream did crash early on in the show and never came back, but to be honest, I didn't miss it much at all. I'm not a fan of chat to begin with, and this chat line didn't change my mind. Most chat is pure drivel because the motor-mouths drown out any redeeming content. Even when it was on, Chris didn't seem to be paying much attention to it, and it's perfectly understandable why. It's like trying to listen to a whole roomful of people talking at the same time.<br /><br />When they had one caller at a time on the phone, the show seemed to really take off. I give both these guys major props for putting themselves out there. It must have been a bit like doing stand-up for the first time.<br /><br />If the show continues as a call-in talk format, they should really get Skype integrated. They could host callers from all over the world at no charge, have multiple on-air at the same time, and still be in control of who was speaking. Who knows, maybe ustream is working on providing that capability as part of its site. That would be a great addition to the service.<br /><br />In the aftermath, this has been hailed as a revolutionary event, a paradigm shift, a disruption to broadcast and cable TV. See <a href="http://pulverblog.pulver.com/archives/006819.html">Pulver's</a> and <a href="http://spaceygreview.blogspot.com/2007/04/gatekeepers-are-gone-sing-halleluia.html">Grayson's</a> posts. Also, Steve Garfield, in his customary trailblazing role, started doing <a href="http://www.comvu.com/live/Default.aspx?stevegarfield">live broadcasts</a> using his Nokia N95 using wifi connectivity a couple of weeks ago.<br /><br />Now, I'm not trying to be wet blanket or anything, but I don't see these developments as a fundamental qualitative technology change. That is not to say they are unimportant. But rather, as many times happen in technological breakthroughs, the difference is quantitative; a change in degree but not in kind.<br /><br />After all, web-cams and web-casts have been around for literally years. What's the difference now? I see these significant quantitative changes.<br /><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">Ease of use.</span> Just like blip.tv and YouTube did for videoblogging, sites like ustream have made it very easy to do web-casts of high quality.<br /><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">Quality.</span> As I noted above, last night's show was, at least relatively speaking, of very good technical quality. It's no mean feat to keep video and audio streaming without interruption or stuttering and with good synchronization. And I want to emphasize good synch. Good sound and good sound synch convey a subliminal but very strong quality experience. And that subliminal quality is what sometimes pushes a technology up over the bar of wide acceptance.<br /><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">Inter-modal fusion. </span>How's that for a phrase? :) What I mean is the mutual reinforcement of other internet modalities like Twitter, blogs and IM to flesh out the interactive experience and make it more than the sum of its parts. This is one thing that Internet broadcasting has all over conventional TV and that mainstream media may never understand. "It's the conversation, stupid."<br /><br />In his post, Jeff Pulver emphasized the disappearance of the "gatekeepers" as one of the significant developments of last night's broadcast. But the internet has never had gatekeepers (and I hope, never will). The difference now is that you have nearly broadcast quality with no gatekeepers and no cost barriers to entry.<br /><br />I was around for the Golden Age of Television in the 50s and 60s. The developments we have the privilege of witnessing right now are in many ways even more significant. The democratization of the communication channel is on a level with the development of the printing press. And therein lies a warning.<br /><br />All through history, tyrants, despots, corporations and totalitarian regimes of all kinds have at one time or another outlawed, confiscated, destroyed or otherwise tried to suppress the printing press. For the moment, we seem to have beaten back attempts to destroy neutrality for the internet. But I don't think the the Lords of Old Media, facing prodigious losses and disintegration of their empires, will go that quietly. You see, I'm an engineer. I deal with inanimate objects, laws of physics, software. These things are notoriously unmoved by persuasion, argument, anger, cajoling, threat, incentive or contract terms. We engineers live at that distinctly difficult place where the elastic rubber of human expectation meets the hard road of reality. In other words, we have to fulfill what the salesman promised. <br /><br />In the world of software, making any kind of estimate is risky business. There have been books written on why this is so, so I'll not trouble you with my own explanation. It must suffice to say that anyone who doesn't accept that this is true and inescapable is not living in the same world that I am. But that doesn't stop bosses and salesmen from selling unimplemented features and promising delivery dates, usually without asking the people who have to make it happen. In fact, this is the conventional management approach for getting engineering to produce. <br /><br />The former CEO of the company I used to work for used this technique all the time to "take business off the table" as he put it. In other words, promise the customer a feature set or delivery date to get them to sign the contract. Often, he wouldn't even tell Engineering until a few weeks before the actual delivery. Then, we'd have to hack something together in crisis mode. To be fair, he would always take the heat from the customer when we didn't make the date, but it sure didn't do a lot for my blood pressure, or the quality of the work, or my estimation of him, or after a time, the company's reputation. Something to be regulated, to be parceled out to the highest bidder, to be controlled by mega-corporations?<br /><br />Please! Don't continue to perpetuate this false perception that internet video is just another kind of television. IT'S NOT TELEVISION. <br /><br />Television is one-way. Internet video is multi-way. The fact that viewers talk to each other is even more important than that they talk back to the producer. You were among the first to point that out! IT'S NOT TELEVISION.<br /><br />Television is centrally controlled and we are force-fed home shopping channels and infomercials because it lines the pockets of Comcast and Cox. Internet video is uncontrolled and diverse. IT'S NOT TELEVISION.<br /><br />Television is homogenized to appeal to the lowest common denominator and not, heaven forbid, offend anyone. Internet video is wonderfully free to be and say and do anything. It's the ultimate in "if you don't like it, don't watch it". Nobody but you even decides what you can choose from. There's no power broker to apply "family values" pressure to. You have to make an even more deliberate choice to watch something. IT'S NOT TELEVISION.<br /><br />Television is bored couch potatoes with glazed-over eyes flipping their remote in never-ending cycles of the same crap channels. Internet TV is inquisitive and engaged people choosing and evaluating and interactively critiquing, panning or recommending an endless variety of new and different things every hour. IT'S NOT TELEVISION.<br /><br />Finally, the word "television" has come to be synonymous with "the vast wasteland". It speaks of bland, droning pap, of marketing pukes in suits with their "notes" on scripts. It says creativity is the last issue on the table, behind focus-groups, product placement and Nielsens. Television has become the metaphor for everything that is vacuous, vapid, tepid and tasteless about American culture.<br /><br />Jeff, please... it's not television. It was held at the Stata Center at MIT in Cambridge. Sitting atop a ledge on the first floor of this building is this legendary icon of <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MIT_hacks">MIT "hacking"</a> or pranks. This police car was found by the campus authorities atop the Great Dome of the university. It was complete with blue lights flashing, a dummy police officer and a dozen doughnuts in front seat. My next window is after 3?<br /></blockquote><br />Twitter is an incredible force for keeping people connected and helping them find each other, even better than just a cell phone itself because you can reach many people at the same time. It's carrying around a group of friends no matter where you go. It's nice to feel connected like that.<br /><br />Think about how many times you've been to conferences in the past and found yourself alone, wondering where the heck everyone you knew is, or where they were going for dinner, or where the slammin' party was that night. Twitter is great for keeping in touch, and it allows you to let out only as much info as you care to. <br /><br />Like a lot of other people, I was skeptical about Twitter, but I've been quickly converted. No wonder they won the Web award at SXSW. <br /><br />It's ironic that a few years back, people were concerned that the web and Internet were going to turn people into pasty house-bound recluses with little social interaction. It's having exactly the opposite effect. It's connecting people and bringing them together in myriad new ways. This piece sits on an enormous lawn overlooking Long Island Sound. My wife and I spent some time walking the grounds and enjoying the spectacular outlooks. This mansion and its grounds are still used for weddings and other functions. I've observed that there are two sort of opposed personality types. I'll call them "thinkers" vs. "grinders". <br /><br />Thinkers always want new things to work on. They tend to be easily bored and aren't really good at finishing things. But they're great at starting things with new ideas and creative ways of solving existing problems. A thinker is also usually lazy, both in the good way I alluded to in the previous post and in the less desirable aspects. They'd rather think about a new, faster, easier way to do something, than to just bear down and do it the old way. Thinkers have to be fast at doing things if they're ever to get anything accomplished because they tend to lose interest when the work becomes at all mundane.<br /><br />Grinders, on the other hand, are great a finishing things, carrying through, sticking to it, persevering through hardship, delivering on the promise, planning the work and working the plan. They'd rather try harder with an existing process and get good at doing it than experiment with a new process. You could say they're more result-oriented. <br /><br />Now of course, most people lie somewhere in the middle, but in my experience, they tend to cluster around one end or the other.<br /><br />Every once in a while you run across someone who has both qualities in generous amounts. One of those rare people is one of my personal heroes: Thomas Edison. He was incredibly creative but also had dogged perseverance. It was Edison who said, <blockquote>"Success is 10 percent inspiration and 90 percent perspiration."</blockquote><h1 style="margin: 0pt; font-size: 12px; font-weight: normal;"></h1>He worked for months trying to find a material for light bulb filaments that would last longer than a few hours. He had the spirit of a thinker, though. He'd wander around his labs and ask his employees, "Are you having fun?". He knew the joy of creativity and wanted to foster that in his people. <br /><br />You need both kinds of people in the world, so don't despair if a full in-basket fills you with dread. And I say, <span style="font-weight:bold;">"Way to go, Air Tran!!" Woo hoo!</span> Somebody final stands up to unruly kids and their inconsiderate parents.<br /><br />At the end of the Yahoo item, the father is quoted as saying he and his family would never fly Air Tran again. My reaction? "Can I get that in writing?" <br /><br />I have now put Air Tran tops on my list of preferred carriers next time I fly.<br /><br />Here's hoping all the other parents that don't control their kids also boycott Air Tran. Well, I checked it out this morning, and was itching to leave a comment and see what others were saying. But.... no comment area or link. At least that I could find. So, I up and emailed her. Here's what I wrote.<br /><br /><br /><blockquote><span style="font-style:italic;">Amanda,<br /><br />Just got done watching your first installment on ABCnews.com.<br /><br />So, first off, congratulations!! <br /><br />The good news:<br />1. You look and sound fantastic! The pro studio, lighting, editing and sound all contribute to a well-produced piece.<br /><br />2. I like that you've kept the t-shirt, the hair flick, and best: the old Amanda attitude! (where are the paper tosses, though?)<br /><br />3. Oh yeah... the content... :) Good stuff for the most part, but see The Bad News.<br /><br />The bad news:<br /><br />1. The ads. OMG, they play every time you to try watch something. BAD, BAD, BAD, BAD. At least have the player do a one-time per visit thing. Better yet, no video ads. PLEASE! <br /><br />2. I'm sending you this email because there's no way to make a comment on that episode. Well, it may be there somewhere, but damned if I can find it.<br />If you want to keep your vlog-aware fans and create new ones, it's got to look more like a vlog, not ABC News sound bites. I want to comment and see what other people say.<br /><br />3. No links to the topics you covered. Again, they may be there somewhere, but damned if I can find them, especially when every time I click on something I have to listen to a 30 sec ad I can't pause or skip over. After a couple of tries at finding links, I gave up. Please, please. Ditch the ads.<br /><br />4. For a weekly gig, I think it needs to be longer, and slower paced. Hope that sometimes you'll also go less pro and more "commando" like AAA. It should be a balance, though. Use the pros to let you be seen and heard better, but not so much that you lose your connection to the peeps, which, as we all know is what vlogs are all about.<br /><br />5. Again, it needs to look more like a blog/vlog not another brick in the ABC News wall. You need more space, your own page, and you need to have creative control on the design. Don't let the ABC style Nazis tell you different! The medium is the message.<br /><br />6. On the same note...Use a more normal player please! One with frame shuttle, or at least fast forward. Tell ABC to shove their proprietary player. That would partially solve the ad problem, too. Or maybe better... Cross-post to blip! Yeah!<br /><br />So, on the whole, a promising start, but you've got to lay it down to ABC. Maybe because of the Muddy Waters sound track, or the awesome sunset I just happened to catch? I'd love to know why, if you can spare a moment to leave a comment.<br /><br />Someone pointed out to me that some people may be mistakenly going to the shingle treatments post because they think it's about alternative ways to remedy that most painful and uncomfortable illness, shingles. But alas, they'll be disappointed because it's about how to flare out siding shingles on your new house.<br /><br />And on that other topic about the people speaking. Hot Damn! I'm trying to decide whether I should put more effort into getting video and editing up a vlog entry on the movie Mystic Pizza.&#160; Please read on, watch the clip, and then comment on whether you'd like to see more.&#160; I'm undecided.<br /></p><p>You see,&#160; I live close to the village of Mystic, Connecticut.&#160; One of its claims to fame is that it was the location for the popular 80s film, Mystic Pizza, which starred Julia Roberts in the role of Daisy Arujo. This gig was her breakout role and played a big part in launching her film career.</p><p>From watching the film, I've identified several nearby places that were used as filming locations.&#160; Not surprisingly, most of them aren't actually in Mystic, but in nearby towns.&#160; I thought people might be interested to see these places &#34;in real life&#34; and learn where they actually are, and what part they played in the film.&#160; This blog contains a little footage on the building that was the external set of the pizza shop. Dave's hobby is restoring collectible cars. He gave me a little tour of his 1964 Sunbeam Tiger. This baby has a 300+ horsepower engine on a frame that's only slightly larger than a golf cart! Unfortunately, I didn't bring the camera when he took me for a ride. Probably a good thing, however, as the acceleration would have snapped the camera right out of my hands. I'm kind of disappointed in the video quality. It looks a lot better on the camera than it does on the computer screen. There was very little light as you can see. It was nice to get some chat time with <a href="http://www.stevegarfield.com">Steve Garfield,</a> and great to meet Karen Gilbert of <a href="http://www.rumorgirls.com">RumorGirls</a>, along with their producer Frank. And nice to meet so many other nice folks. Sorry not to have posted lately, but I've been waiting for my new camera and 4 GB memory chip to come it. <br /><br />The camera arrived on Friday and today the chip finally arrived, so I'm kickin' it now! For those interested in equipment, it's a Canon A630 8 mpixel camera that takes great video. The 4 gig chip will hold about 50 minutes of 320x240 video. I'm taking it to BLOGtoberfest in Boston this Thursday, so I'm hoping to have a lot of really fun video to post for you on Friday. There are a lot of cool bloggers, vloggers and podcasters coming from all over New England and Boston.
